The 2023 monsoon season brought devastating floods to Koshi Province. But in 12 communities where IRDC Nepal had installed community-based flood early warning systems, families were able to evacuate safely before floodwaters arrived.
How the System Works
River-level sensors send automated SMS alerts to Community Disaster Management Committee members when water levels exceed pre-set thresholds. CDMCs then activate local alarm systems to evacuate families.
2023 Result
On 19 September 2023, sensors registered rapidly rising water levels. CDMCs activated evacuation protocols at 11:30 PM, moving over 2,400 people to safe locations before the river broke its banks at 2:00 AM. Everyone was safe.
