IRDC Nepal is proud to announce that 20 communities in Madhesh Province have officially been declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) by their respective local governments. This milestone marks a significant step in our Integrated WASH Programme, supported by UNICEF Nepal.
What ODF Means
Open defecation is a major cause of diarrhoeal disease and child mortality in Nepal. Achieving ODF status means that 100% of households use clean toilets and hygiene behaviours including handwashing have been adopted.
The Journey to ODF
- Household mapping to identify those without toilets
- Construction of 450 household toilets
- Training of 120 community hygiene promoters
- Community-led ODF verification walks
